Static FM: Run Your Own Pirate Radio Station on Android

Static FM is a narrative game where you run an underground radio station. You're SPIKE — a rogue DJ operating from a beat-up orange VW van, broadcasting to a city that wants to hear what the official stations won't play. Every night you choose where to park, how strong to broadcast, and what to spin. The city listens. The signal police listen too.

The Gameplay Loop

Each night starts with a decision: where to broadcast from. Different parts of the city have different audience densities, different detection risks, and different vibes. A broadcast from the industrial district reaches a different listener profile than one from the arts quarter.

You manage signal strength — higher power reaches more listeners but makes you easier to find. The detection meter climbs as you broadcast. Stay too long in one spot, or broadcast too hot, and the signal police triangulate your position. Move before they close in, or face a game-ending bust.

Track selection matters. Your listeners have taste. Playing the wrong genre for the neighbourhood tanks your audience. Reading the city and matching your set to what people want keeps your listener count climbing.

Upgrades and Progression

Listeners translate to income, which translates to van upgrades: better antenna (more signal, lower detection risk), better music library, improved evasion gear. The story unfolds chapter by chapter as your reputation grows — from obscure pirate broadcast to genuine underground phenomenon.

Atmosphere

Static FM is built around aesthetic. Hand-crafted city scenes, a full day-night cycle, retro 80s synth soundtrack, rain and neon. The story has dialogue choices that shape your relationships with characters in the city. It's a game about the feeling of being underground, of the airwaves belonging to the people who use them.
