HopTrace: Visual Traceroute and Latency Mapping for Android

HopTrace is a free Android app that visualises traceroutes and latency with a real-time RTT graph, continuous ping monitoring, and hop-by-hop network path analysis.

Traceroute output is a wall of numbers — IP addresses, asterisks, milliseconds — that takes experience to interpret quickly. HopTrace turns that raw data into something you can read at a glance: a visual hop-by-hop path through the network, with RTT graphed over time.

What Is HopTrace?

HopTrace is a free Android app that runs visual traceroutes and continuous ping tests with a real-time latency graph. It's designed for network engineers, IT support professionals, and technically curious users who want to understand why a connection is slow or intermittent — without squinting at a terminal output.

Hop-by-Hop Traceroute Visualisation

When you run a traceroute in HopTrace, each hop is displayed as a clear entry in a list showing the hop number, IP address, hostname (where resolvable), and round-trip time. High-latency hops are highlighted so you can immediately spot where the delay is being introduced. Timeouts and non-responsive hops are clearly distinguished from legitimate high-latency nodes.

This is the kind of information that tells you whether a slow connection is a local network problem, an ISP routing issue, or latency at the destination server — critical knowledge for diagnosing the right thing.

Continuous Ping with RTT Graph

HopTrace's continuous ping tool sends ICMP requests to a target host at regular intervals and graphs the round-trip time in real time. This makes it easy to:

  • Identify intermittent packet loss (gaps in the graph)
  • Spot jitter (erratic RTT variance)
  • Monitor a host during a maintenance window to confirm stability
  • Document network performance issues over time

When a client says "the internet is slow sometimes," running a continuous ping during the problem window gives you evidence to work with rather than anecdotes.

Fast Network Diagnostics in the Field

HopTrace is built for mobile use — quick to launch, easy to read on a phone screen, and fast to interpret. Whether you're standing in a server room, at a client site, or troubleshooting your home network, HopTrace gives you the traceroute and latency data you need in a format that actually makes sense on a small screen.
